"JUST LIKE WINTER"

Steeped in honesty and candour, The Humbuckin’ Pickups weave intimacy with whit in this new single – Just Like Winter. Maldon Minstrel and Troubadour Foundation award winners, the 4-piece Victorian outfit showcase not only their award-winning songwriting, but effortless musicianship as they explore themes of perceptions. As frontman Ewan Cloonan’s silvery baritone sings “if you open up the book, on any given page, you’ll only get one part of the tale…” Cloonan explains “While the antagonist isn’t a real person… we've all met someone similar. They're fragile. They overcompensate. They're lost. They're searching. They seem overbearing. They're vulnerable. They're as warm as a winter's day. They're just like winter… however, this song shows that you don’t always understand their story and you shouldn’t pretend to.” The music video was directed and filmed by fellow Victorian director Lachlan Bryan (and renowned musician of Wagons, Lachlan Bryan and the Wildes fame) with the set (and props) kindly provided by amazing supporters of live music Watts River Brewery. Cloonan says, “I had a great time filming the clip… and I think it’s a new band rule that for all future video clips also need to make sure we’re plied with delicious beer!” Described by Andrew Patterson (Troubadour Foundation) as “the best band no one has heard of,” The Humbuckin’ Pickups enchant audiences with their songs. Their four-part harmonies evoke a unique feeling of rawness and candidness, while the songs are always presented with a sharpness, warmth and enduring self-aware perspective. No stranger to the stage, the band’s passion is the connection and intimacy found in performance, where years of front-bars and street-corners have with growing momentum morphed into having the honour of sharing the songs at festivals such as Springfest (QLD), Bendigo Blues and Roots (VIC), Yackandandah Folk Festival (VIC) and Fleurieu Folk Festival (SA) among a suite of others. With the band’s album #3 slated for release in early 2023, Just Like Winter shows that the band’s newest songs are as thought provoking as ever and are asking you to come along for the adventure. (#AgeingIn). Asked what the future holds for the band – double bassist Maxine Sutcliffe says “we have some very exciting announcements in the near future – to the tune of national touring… but more on that later” Any Melbourne fans can catch the band launch their single at the long-time supporting venue of country music, The Retreat Hotel on Sunday 22nd of October – while other fans should watch this space for exciting news coming soon!
